WHY Naples Florida?

Updated: Feb 21, 2023

Well, in a nutshell

(Or should we say, clamshell...)

We're known as

Need we say more.

But alas, of course we will.

Naples isn't just on the tip of our tongues- it goes all the way from the tip of our nose to the tip of our toes.

You'll find us perched right there on the Gulf of Mexico with nearly 30 miles of soft, white sandy beaches beckoning for play.

And our WEATHER. Well don't even get us started.

Did you know~ we average 300 DAYS of SUNSHINE a year.

And our average daily temperature sits at a beautiful 77 degrees.

Take that - old man winter. Here, flip flops rule!

Specializing in world class shopping, dining, arts, culture & music - Naples rich history (more about our history down below) makes us a perfect destination for international visitors from around the globe. What a way to meet & make lifelong new friends spanning the miles & the oceans.

For our more adventurous souls Mother Nature has blessed us from waters to forests.

Whatever your fancy- sugar white sand beaches or mangroves, cypress swamps & estuaries, we've got 'em. From dolphins & manatees to panthers & black bears. Our wildlife watching is 2nd to none. Yup, even alligator sightings continually leave one in awe.

Water worshippers enjoy boating, canoeing, kayaking, fishing...

While land lovers partake in hiking, birdwatching, sightseeing, photography, zoos, botanical gardens....

And what about golf. Last but certainly not least.

Naples is known as the 'Golf Capital of the World.' A pretty impressive title.

We currently boast 1400 golf courses, of which 90 are 18 hole championship courses.

There is a course in Naples for everyone. No matter your handicap or skill. And when we say everyone, we mean everyone.... Just ask Mr. Squirrel here. (Which we understand was looking for the golfers peanut butter & jelly sandwich- while the golfer was out looking for his ball.)

Are you a history buff

Naples lives inside Collier County, which was founded in 1923.

But our humble beginnings began with the Calusa Indians (their burial grounds can be found on Marco Island.)

In 1513 Ponce de Leon discovered the state of Florida. The Calusa Indians were not amused, nor had any interest in sharing their beautiful home with new strangers. 40 years of disease & war against the Calusa's finally gave way to their demise. The years that followed Seminole tribes of small bands of Greek Indians made their way downward from Alabama & Georgia calling the area 'home' and many descendants still reside in the Naples area today.

In 1886 John Stuart Williams, a former Confederate general & US Senator of Kentucky along with his partner Walter Haldeman, the publisher of the Louisville Courier Journal founded the City Of Naples. They wrote extensively in the Journal of the mild temperature and amazing fishing. Often referring to the bay as 'surpassing the Bay in Naples Italy' - hence how we became known as Naples, Florida. And as we could go on and on towards the development of Naples from the late 1800's to today's time, let's just summarize things here that today's Naples gives way to little glimpse into the life those tribes once proudly thought of as home.

But for now- Here's a fun fact before we end this blog post.

35 miles east of Naples on US 41

(also known as the Tamiami Trail)

A post office.

Big deal you say.

Well, not really a BIG DEAL.

Actually it's a pretty SMALL deal.

Considering that it's the SMALLEST post office in the United States.

You do say...

At only 8 feet and a few inches deep and 7 foot wide this shed that once stored tools & tomatoes now houses 40 P.O. boxes and one single human being.

But make no mistake. It's a real working post office.

With a real mail carrier going out 6 days a week delivering the mail to approximately 300 customers who live in an 170 mile radius of literally the middle of nowhere. And just so you know, alligators often sunbathe in the parking lot. And seeing that there's only room for 1 car (or 1 alligator), you'll have to wait to park until he's had his fill. And not to mention, during our tourist season, folks line up at the window to send postcards from the Nation's Smallest Post Office.

So between the alligators and the tourists, just plan on bringing a snack.
